When to Replace
We are extremely fortunate to be living amongst the land of the giants (trees). However, knowing when it is time to part ways is key to avoid potential injuries and or property damage. Below are some signs to look for that indicate your tree is in ill health and needs attention.
Be sure to call a local arborist if you notice any of these signs, they might be able to save your tree!
Signs that may indicate poor health and/or structural problems:
Foliage color not typical compared to similar species
Large bare spots in the canopy
Misshapen leaves
Fungus growing from the trunk
Lots of new shoots from the base of the tree
Large dead branches
Bark falling off
Trunk cavities
Decayed areas
Vertical cracks on the trunk
Buckling of the soil near the base of the tree
No leaves on the tree during the summer
Other warning signs
A tree that has begun to lean. Some trees just naturally lean, and that's fine! It’s the ones that grew up straight and began leaning in a short period of time: those trees can be problematic. It could be from storm damage or possible root system failure. Be sure to take pictures of your trees so you can compare over the years to help spot these signs.
Please note if the tree is far enough away to not cause damage to anyone its best to leave it be as these dead and dying trees provide habitat for countless wildlife and natural bird feeders for woodpeckers.
